Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS), also known as switching Power Supply and Switch converter, is a high-frequency Power conversion device, which is a kind of Power Supply. Its function is to convert the voltage of a location into the voltage or current required by the client through different forms of architecture. The input of switching power supply is mostly ac power supply (e.g. mains) or dc power supply, while the output is mostly devices requiring dc power supply, such as personal computers. The switching power supply converts voltage and current between the two.

Switch power supply is different from the linear power supply, switching power supply using the switching transistor is likely in the fully open mode (saturated zone) and full closed area (as), switching between these two modes have the characteristics of low dissipation, can have high dissipation switching conversion between, but time is very short, so compare save energy and produce less waste heat. Ideally, switching power itself does not consume electrical energy. Voltage regulation is achieved by adjusting the time when transistors turn on and off. In contrast, the transistor itself consumes power as it operates in a large area during the generation of output voltage from a linear power source. The high conversion efficiency of the switching power supply is one of the big advantages, and because of the high working frequency of the switching power supply, small size, light weight transformer can be used, so the switching power supply will be smaller than the linear power supply, the weight will be lighter.


Switching power is better than linear power when high efficiency, volume and weight are the key considerations. However, the switching power supply is complex, and internal transistors will switch frequently. If the switching current is not treated, noise and electromagnetic interference may affect other equipment. Moreover, if the switching power supply is not specially designed, its power factor may not be high.
